If you have not read
EDM of Tool Steel , read it first then return to read the EDM tips.
Some common EDM problems may be encountered when using an EDM in your tooling fabrication. Arcing, pitting, cracking and inclusions are all problems that may be avoided by following these precautions.
1. Locate your EDM equipment in a temperature controlled environment. These machines require consistently cool temperatures to maintain their accuracy.
2. Rough machine large cross sections (over 2”) to minimize stress at the EDM surface of the tool. Rough machining minimizes the amount of heat generated during the EDM process, thereby adding less stress to the tool steel.
3. Use low amperage, high frequency EDM settings to reduce amount of heat affected zone.
4. Make multiple skim passes at low amperage to minimize heat affected zone.
