PM 420 is a martensitic stainless steel that provides excellent wear resistance and good corrosion resistance. PM 420 offers much better wear resistance than 440C and D-2, while providing corrosion resistance equal to or better than 440C. The toughness of PM 420 is slightly better than 440C. The high carbon content combines with the vanadium to form vanadium carbides, which provides the wear resistance, while leaving the chromium free to provide the corrosion resistance
