Where do we begin? Simplytoolsteel is the result of many things that have happened during my 30 year career in the tool steel industry. During my years in the tool steel industry, I would receive many calls or request for information about tool steels.

These questions consisted of many topics, such as:

What tool steel works the best for (fill in the blank)?
How long should I leave my tool in the furnace?
What grade of steel makes the ultimate knife?
Why does my tool always chip out?
How do I machine/grind this stuff?

Simplytoolsteel adresses these questions and many more so that the tool maker may gain a better understanding of tool steel and its' role in the manufacturing process.

We would like to take you on a journey through the tool steel world. Hopefully, this journey will help you in your career interest. We think that the best way to start this jouney is by answering the most basic question of: What is tool steel?

Some of my favorite inquiries have been from the artists that are employed in the knifemaking industry. Both commercial and hobbyist knifemakers have been an inspiration in the development of simplytoolsteel.com. I know of no other industry where the craftsmen debate the characteristics and performance of tool steel more than the knife makers.
