Tensile strength is the maximum amount of pressure that a material will carry before breaking under a slowly applied, gradually increasing load during a tensile test. The tensile strength is used during the engineering process in the tooling industry.
In preparation for the tensile test, a tool steel bar is machined to a smooth gage section in the center and a larger shoulder on each end. The shoulders are used to fixture the specimen in the tensile testing machine. The center gage section is the section where the measurements will be determined.
During the tensile test, the specimen is fixtured in the tensile testing machine on the shoulders, by various means. The specimen is pulled in opposite directions until it fails. The amount of force used to pull the specimen apart is the tensile strength.
The tensile strength of tool steel is directly related to the hardness of the tool steel. The chart below shows the approximate tensile strength for tool steel at the given hardness. Tensile strength of tool steel is expressed as pounds per square inch.(psi)
